Spotlight on ACUVUE®

This Spotlight Series article is editorially independent content.

Astigmatism affects approximately 50% of the population, making it one of the most prevalent vision disorders. It results from irregularities in the curvature of the eye, which cause blurred or distorted vision.1 A literature review found that the prevalence of astigmatism in the general population ranged from 8% to 62% depending on age, with the highest rates seen in individuals aged 70 years and older.2 The American Optometric Association reported that increasing age is the most prominent risk factor for presbyopia, a gradual loss of near vision. This condition affects nearly 90% of individuals older than 45 years.3

Acuvue® Oasys Max—Meeting the Demands of Modern Life

Traditionally, individuals with astigmatism face limited options when they start experiencing presbyopia.1 To help address the global prevalence of astigmatism and increasing rates of presbyopia, Johnson & Johnson recently added 2 new toric lenses to its range of Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day contact lenses:

  1. Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism
  2. Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day for Astigmatism

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal for Astigmatism

This is the first and only daily disposable contact lens designed specifically for individuals with both astigmatism and presbyopia. It helps filter out blue light, supports the eye’s natural tear film, and helps eyes easily switch focus from distance to reading.1,4

Studies found that 95% of individuals reported clear vision during their daily activities, while 87% saw clearly while driving at night. Furthermore, 92% of wearers said their eyes felt comfortable throughout the entire day.1

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day for Astigmatism

This lens is designed to provide clarity, comfort, and lens stability throughout the day for individuals with astigmatism. In clinical trials, nearly 99% reported clear and reliable vision, 97% reported clear vision for nighttime driving, 89% reported all-day comfort, and 95% observed seeing comfortably with digital device use.5

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day and Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal

In 2022, the company introduced the first 2 products in the MAX line of contact lenses—Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day and Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal.

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day delivers all-day comfort and visual clarity day to night. Clinical trials on eye performance showed that 90% of individuals reported all-day comfort, 86% reported experiencing less eye fatigue when using digital devices, more than 95% reported clarity with digital devices, and nearly 100% said they experienced clear, reliable vision.5

Acuvue Oasys Max 1-Day Multifocal is designed to deliver crisp, clear vision at all distances and in all lighting conditions, in addition to all-day comfort. Clinical trials found that 94% reported clear vision when using a digital device, 80% experienced clear vision near, far, and in-between, 94% reported all-day comfort, and 90% observed end-of-day comfort.5

Technology

The product line, depending on the lens, is supported by 4 proprietary technologies (see FIGURE).

Pupil-Optimized Design

This technology, which is featured in all Acuvue multifocal contact lenses, tailors 100% of parameters optimized for pupal size variations across age and refraction.4

OptiBlue™ Light Filter

Research suggest that approximately 4 in 10 US adults are online constantly, increasing their exposure to blue-violet light. This technology filters about 60% of blue-violet light, the highest in the industry, according to published research.4

TearStable™ Technology

This technology prolongs the tear film stability, with 2 times reduced tear evaporation. Because it helps keep the lens hydrated, it facilitates end-of-day comfort.4

Blink Stabilized® Design

This technology helps to correct astigmatism. It is designed with 4 key features, making it more resistant to gravity, minimizing lower lid interaction, offering easy insertion with its symmetrical design, and delivering a prism-free optic zone.5

Safety Notes

Although serious eye problems from contact lens use are uncommon, they can still occur. To reduce the risk, individuals should follow the recommended wear and replacement schedule, as well as lens care instructions provided by their eye doctor. Contact lenses should not be worn if patients have an eye infection or experience symptoms such as discomfort, excessive tearing, changes in vision, redness, or other eye issues. If any of these symptoms develop, the lenses should be removed, and the eye doctor should be consulted.1
