Children retain vision gains after stopping myopia control lenses

Children who used MiSight 1 day dual-focus contact lenses for myopia control retained their treatment benefits even after stopping, a study found. Their eye growth and myopia progression returned to normal age-related levels without a rebound effect, confirming the long-term effectiveness of the lenses in managing myopia.

Researchers followed 83 participants who had completed a 6-year trial of MiSight lenses and then switched to single-vision lenses for a 1-year “wash-out” period. They monitored axial length and refractive error changes, comparing results with estimated growth patterns of untreated myopic eyes.

After discontinuation, annual eye growth and myopia progression rates returned to age-appropriate levels rather than rebounding. The rates were slightly higher than during the last year of treatment but remained consistent with normal myopic eye development. The study also found that age at treatment initiation influenced progression after cessation, with younger children (ages 8-10) experiencing slightly more post-treatment progression than older ones (ages 11-12). However, the total years of treatment—3 or 6—did not significantly affect post-treatment changes.
