Lid margin thickness linked to contact lens discomfort
A new study explored the relationship between eyelid changes and contact lens discomfort in wearers of soft contact lenses. Researchers assessed 137 participants using the Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ-8) and evaluated tear film stability, Meibomian gland function, and eyelid health.
Several eyelid-related parameters, such as Meibomian gland secretion quality and expressibility, showed some association with contact lens discomfort, but only increased lid margin thickness was significantly linked to reduced contact lens wear time due to discomfort. No strong correlations were found between overall symptom scores and ocular surface measurements.
The authors recommend further research to clarify the role of lid margin thickness and its potential as a target for managing lens-related discomfort.
