Large wearable study examines physical activity and sleep in adults with glaucoma

Adults with glaucoma had modest differences in physical activity and sleep compared with those without glaucoma in a large study using data from commercial wrist-worn devices.

The retrospective cross-sectional study included 40,743 adults aged 40 years or older with Fitbit data in the All of Us Research Program. Of these participants, 1,245 (3.1%) had glaucoma and contributed an average of 2.5 years of wearable data.

Before adjustment, participants with glaucoma recorded fewer daily steps, lower active calorie expenditure, and fewer lightly and fairly active minutes than controls. They also spent less time in bed and asleep, with more light sleep and less deep, REM, and restless sleep.

After adjustment for demographics, body mass index, sleep disorders, and cardiovascular disease, glaucoma remained associated with fewer restless minutes during sleep, while associations with physical activity and other measures of sleep architecture were no longer observed.
