Study reveals rising global prevalence of myopia, predicting over 740 million cases by 2050

The global prevalence of myopia is steadily increasing, particularly among children and adolescents, with projections indicating that over 740 million people will be affected by 2050, according to a new study.

A recent comprehensive study sheds light on the escalating prevalence of myopia worldwide and provides insights into future trends.

Key Findings:

  • Global Prevalence: Between 1990 and 2023, the prevalence of myopia increased from 24.32% to 35.81%. Projections suggest this number will rise to 36.59% by 2040 and 39.80% by 2050.
  • High-Risk Groups:
    • East Asia has the highest prevalence (35.22%).
    • Urban populations (28.55%), females (33.57%), adolescents (47.00%), and high school students (45.71%) are disproportionately affected.
  • Future Predictions: By 2050, more than 740 million people are expected to suffer from myopia.

The increasing prevalence of myopia highlights an urgent need for public health strategies to address this growing concern, especially in high-risk demographic groups.
