Experts establish standardized outcome measures for corneal neurotization

Posted on

An international panel of experts established standardized outcome measures for corneal neurotization, according to a poster presented at the 2025 World Cornea Congress.

Using a modified Delphi panel method, researchers conducted consensus-building activities through electronic surveys and a virtual meeting. Nineteen international experts from 7 countries participated in the process.

The panel agreed on key outcome measures, including corneal aesthesiometry, Mackie classification of neurotrophic keratitis, best corrected visual acuity, and donor site morbidity. In vivo confocal microscopy was recommended for evaluating the subbasal nerve plexus and intrastromal corneal nerves when available.

By establishing these standardized reporting guidelines, the study aims to facilitate more effective comparisons across different surgical techniques and patient populations.
