Acupuncture-infused eye masks outperform traditional methods for dry eye disease
Acupuncture steam-warming eye masks (ASEM) are more effective than traditional steam-warming eye masks (SEM) in improving symptoms of dry eye disease, particularly in visual display terminal users, according to a study.
In the study, 40 participants were randomly assigned to either the ASEM group (n = 20) or the SEM group (n = 20), both receiving treatment for 2 weeks. The researchers evaluated tear film break-up time, tear meniscus height, and meibomian gland function, alongside subjective symptoms and quality of life.
The ASEM group experienced significant improvements in most subjective symptoms, tear film stability, and meibomian gland health compared to the SEM group. In contrast, the SEM group did not show significant changes in feelings of relaxation or comfort. The ASEM group also reported a stronger sense of refreshment and a lower sensation of ocular discharge.
