New resource maps optometric scope and licensure across the U.S.
The Michigan College of Optometry has created a comprehensive, publicly accessible interactive map detailing the scope of optometric practice and licensure requirements for all U.S. states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico, according to a poster presented at the 2024 American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting.
This resource simplifies the process for optometry students and practitioners looking to compare state regulations and make informed decisions about where to practice.
The study compiled comprehensive data on the scope of optometric practice and licensure requirements for all 50 states, Washington DC, and Puerto Rico. Key data points include authority to perform minor surgical procedures, injections, laser procedures, and oral steroid prescriptions. Licensing requirements, including exams and continuing education, were also gathered.
The researchers created an interactive map, now available to the public, offering easy access to this detailed information. Users can click on a state to view specific regulations. The resource is available on the Michigan College of Optometry website, with updates planned regularly by faculty and students. This tool aims to simplify decision-making for optometry students and practitioners seeking to understand regulatory differences across the U.S.
