Hydrogel lenses outperform silicone hydrogel in comfort and dryness for presbyopia

Posted on

Modern hydrogel contact lenses (EDOF 59) offer significantly better comfort and reduce dry eye symptoms more effectively than silicone hydrogel lenses (EDOF SiHy) in presbyopic patients, making them a promising alternative for aging contact lens wearers, according to a poster presented at ARVO 2025.

In a randomized, double-blind, crossover study involving 15 experienced contact lens wearers with presbyopia, participants evaluated both lens types over a 2-week period. Assessments included visual acuity, tear film quality, comfort ratings, and the CLDEQ-8 dry eye questionnaire.

Both lenses provided good vision, but the EDOF 59 lens consistently scored higher in comfort at both insertion and at the end of the day, and showed significantly lower dry eye symptoms. Over half of the participants preferred the hydrogel lens, citing greater overall comfort.
