Smartphone reading habits differ between presbyopic and non-presbyopic adults

Individuals with corrected presbyopia adapt their smartphone reading behavior by using larger font sizes, greater viewing distances, and more time to complete reading tasks compared with non-presbyopes, according to a study.

In the study, participants completed standardized reading tasks on a smartphone under habitual viewing conditions. Researchers assessed reading time, viewing distance, and craniovertebral angle to evaluate visual behavior and posture.

Presbyopes used significantly larger font sizes than non-presbyopes (P < 0.01) and read at significantly greater distances (P < 0.001). They also required significantly more time to complete the tasks (P < 0.001).

Craniovertebral angles were similar between groups (P > 0.05), which the researchers noted indicated no significant difference in neck posture during smartphone use.
