Daily disposable contact lenses made from delefilcon A material (specifically, Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism) significantly improve the comfort of wearers compared to commonly used weekly/monthly soft toric lenses, according to a study.
The research focused on symptomatic contact lens wearers with a minimum score of 12 on the Contact Lens Dry Eye Questionnaire (CLDEQ-8). The results demonstrated that refitting with delefilcon A toric lenses led to a substantial reduction in eye discomfort and dryness, indicating that these lenses may offer a more comfortable option for individuals with astigmatism.
The open-label, single-arm study enrolled 85 current reusable soft toric lens wearers who reported a minimum score of 12 on CLDEQ-8. Participants were administered the CLDEQ-8 after one replacement schedule of their habitual toric lenses (2 to 4 weeks) and after 2 weeks of wear with delefilcon A toric daily disposable lenses (Dailies Total1 for Astigmatism; Alcon).
Results demonstrated a significant improvement in comfort for patients refit with delefilcon A toric lenses. The mean total CLDEQ-8 score was 16.8 ± 8.1 for patients using their habitual toric lenses and 12.4 ± 7.5 for those using delefilcon A toric lenses, showcasing a notable difference of 4.3 ± 10.4.
Furthermore, 78.9% of subjects reported little to no intensity of eye discomfort with delefilcon A toric lenses, in contrast to 51.7% for the habitual toric lenses. Similarly, 77.7% of patients reported little to no intensity of dryness with delefilcon A toric lenses, compared to 50.6% for the habitual toric lenses.
