Refitting symptomatic daily disposable contact lens wearers with delefilcon A (DT1) lenses improves end-of-day comfort, reduces dryness, and extends comfortable wear time, making them a beneficial option for individuals with dry eye disease, according to a study.
In the prospective comparative study, 35 patients diagnosed with dry eye following TFOS DEWS 2 guidelines, wore their usual daily disposable lenses during an initial assessment and then switched to DT1 lenses for 1 month. Participants were unaware of the lens type during the study. Key metrics included subjective ratings of end-of-day comfort, dryness, and wear time.
Key Findings:
- Most participants experienced evaporative dry eye, with 2 patients classified as having aqueous deficiency.
- The median CLDEQ-8 dryness score improved from 17 (fair) with habitual lenses to 13 (good) with DT1 (P < 0.01).
- DT1 lenses provided significantly better end-of-day comfort (P = 0.01) and less dryness (P = 0.01).
- Comfortable wear time increased from 6.7 ± 3.2 hours with habitual lenses to 8.5 ± 4.1 hours with DT1 (P = 0.04).
- No significant differences were found in vision ratings (P = 0.07).
The study concluded that DT1 lenses significantly improve comfort, reduce dryness, and extend comfortable wear time for symptomatic DD wearers, offering a promising option for those with dry eye disease.
