US registry tracks interventional glaucoma treatment patterns
A US registry tracking interventional glaucoma procedures from 2022 to 2025 may provide a snapshot of current interventional glaucoma treatment patterns and a baseline for tracking future changes, according to a study.
The Newton Registry includes deidentified ICD-10 and CPT data from 724,728 encounters between 157,246 patients with glaucoma and 605 providers at 35 practices.
Patients with open-angle glaucoma (82.1%) and those with suspected glaucoma (10.5%) accounted for most of the registry. Glaucoma was mild in 51.8% of patients, moderate in 13.5%, and severe in 17.8%.
Mean follow-up was 15.4 months, with 56.3% experiencing a lapse of more than 12 months in glaucoma care. Overall, 12.2% of patients underwent ≥1 glaucoma procedure during the observation period.
Selective laser trabeculoplasty (44.4%), stent implantation (25.7%), canaloplasty (12.3%), goniotomy (12.1%), and traditional filtering surgeries (4.5%) were the most common procedures.
