Stakeholders identify priorities and challenges for integrating AI into optometry education

Key topics for inclusion in optometry curricula, along with barriers to implementation and concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) use in learning environments, were identified through a qualitative study exploring stakeholder perspectives on AI in education.

Analysis of semi-structured interviews with eyecare practitioners, students, educators, regulators, and AI technology experts found 3 major themes: curriculum design and delivery, facilitators and barriers to teaching, and AI as an educational tool.

Participants most frequently identified interpreting AI-generated outputs, foundational AI knowledge, ethical considerations, and integrating AI into clinical workflows as important educational priorities. Challenges to incorporating AI into optometry training included limited access to AI technologies, funding and time constraints, and the need for frequent curriculum updates due to the rapid pace of AI development.

The study also found that some students already use AI tools to support their studies. However, many participants perceived that higher education institutions hold negative views of AI and discourage its use. Concerns raised about AI in education included risks of plagiarism and reduced critical thinking.
