Corneal reshaping method shows promising results for near vision improvement

Intrastromal pocket creation using the SMILE module effectively improves near vision in emmetropic presbyopia without compromising distance vision, according to a poster presented at the 2025 World Cornea Congress.

Researchers treated 22 eyes of 11 patients between the ages of 40 and 50 years, creating a 7.60 mm stromal pocket with the VisuMax femtosecond laser while preserving corneal integrity.

After 1 year, patients showed significant improvement in near visual acuity at 35 cm, with intermediate vision ranging from J4 to J5 at 70 cm, while maintaining 20/20 distance vision. Participants reported high satisfaction without night glare issues. The technique reshaped the corneal surface without lenticule removal, increasing spherical aberrations to enhance near vision.

The study concludes that this approach is a safe and effective method for presbyopia correction, offering improved near vision while maintaining overall visual quality.
