Study explores link between vision differences and fall risk in older adults

Posted on

Stereoacuity declines with age and is significantly influenced by differences in corrected visual acuity between the eyes, according to a study that suggests assessing stereoacuity in older adults may be useful in fall prevention strategies.

The study involved 91 participants with an average age of 56.2 years. Key findings showed that stereoacuity, a critical factor in depth perception, declines with age and is significantly influenced by differences in corrected distance and near visual acuity between the eyes. However, interocular differences in pupil size, higher-order aberrations, and aniseikonia did not show a notable effect on stereoacuity.
