Low-cost glaucoma screening tool proves highly accurate in high-risk communities
The Laroche glaucoma calculator is a highly accurate, low-cost screening tool that can effectively identify individuals at risk for glaucoma in high-risk communities, according to a study.
The community-based research included 823 participants over the age of 40; 716 participants completed a follow-up exam. Screenings took place at community events, senior centers, places of worship, and medical office lobbies. Trained medical students and assistants measured intraocular pressure (IOP) and central corneal thickness (CCT) before participants underwent comprehensive eye exams by ophthalmologists to confirm glaucoma status.
Results showed that the Laroche glaucoma calculator had a sensitivity of 93.5% and a specificity of 91.3%, with an overall accuracy of 91.9%. The tool’s high predictive values suggest it could be an effective and affordable method for early glaucoma detection in underserved populations.
