Glaucoma diagnostic patterns differ between novice and expert optometrists, study finds

Novice and expert optometrists approach glaucoma diagnosis differently, with experts relying on intuitive pattern recognition and comprehensive risk assessments, while novices depend on structured analysis and external guidance, according to a study.

The research analyzed diagnostic strategies through in-depth interviews with 14 optometrists of varying experience levels, using a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods.

Expert optometrists demonstrated greater diagnostic accuracy with limited data, achieving a 20% concordance rate with clinical diagnoses compared to 10% among novices. Both groups, however, improved to a 42% concordance rate when provided with complete patient history.

Experts relied on intuitive pattern recognition and comprehensive risk assessments, showcasing cognitive efficiency. In contrast, novices favored structured, analytical methods and external references. Significant differences were also noted in patient follow-up times, influenced strongly by experience (P < 0.001).

The researchers concluded that “These findings demonstrate the critical need for AI systems tailored to varying levels of expertise.”
