Meta-analysis reveals glaucoma as a risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease

Posted on

Individuals with glaucoma are at a significantly higher risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease (AD), according to a new meta-analysis.

The study, which evaluated data from 8 articles involving a total of 131,987 participants published, focused on assessing the risk of AD events in individuals diagnosed with glaucoma.

The analysis demonstrated a combined hazard ratio of 1.29 (95% confidence interval = 1.05-1.59; P < .001; I² = 95.1%), indicating that glaucoma patients exhibit a significantly higher risk for disease-free survival in AD cases. Subgroup analyses identified normal tension glaucoma as the predominant risk factor contributing to this increased risk.

These findings suggest that individuals with glaucoma should be monitored closely for potential AD symptoms.
