Myopia associated with shorter tear film breakup times and higher DED scores
There is a significant association between dry eye disease (DED) and myopia, with individuals who have myopia being more prone to DED symptoms, according to a study. Early intervention, patient education, and preventive measures are crucial, especially for younger people at higher risk of developing myopia.
Researchers analyzed data from 1,313 studies, of which 15 were included in the final analysis. The results showed that 45.1% of individuals with myopia reported DED symptoms, with higher Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) scores and shorter tear film breakup times compared to those without myopia. Meta-regression analysis also indicated a link between spherical equivalent and the prevalence of DED symptoms in adults with myopia.
The study emphasizes the importance of patient awareness, early screening, and preventive strategies to address DED in myopic populations.
