New tool measures parents’ knowledge and practices related to myopia prevention

A 35-item scale assessing parents’ knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to myopia prevention and control demonstrated good reliability and validity in a survey of parents of children and adolescents.
Researchers developed the initial scale based on KAP theory, a literature review, and expert consultations. Overall, 500 parents of children and adolescents from kindergartens, primary schools, and secondary schools were surveyed, and 477 valid questionnaires were returned.
The final scale included 3 dimensions (knowledge, attitude, and practice) and 35 items. The item-level content validity index ranged from 0.897 to 0.974. The scale-level content validity index was 0.945. Exploratory factor analysis identified 3 factors that explained 73.52% of the total variance, and confirmatory factor analysis showed good model fit.
The total scale had a Cronbach’s α coefficient of 0.944, with test-retest and split-half reliability coefficients of 0.918 and 0.922, respectively.
