New study compares effectiveness of lubricating eyedrops for dry eye treatment

Posted on

Systane Complete Multi-Dose PF eyedrops appear to be more effective than Walgreen’s Lubricant Balance eyedrops in reducing both subjective dry eye symptoms and objective measures like corneal and conjunctival staining, according to a poster presented at the 2024 American Academy of Optometry Annual Meeting

This double-masked, randomized-controlled trial, included 70 patients with moderate dry eye symptoms. Participants were assigned to either the Systane or Walgreens group, and various measures, including corneal and conjunctival staining, non-invasive tear break-up time (NITBUT), and dry eye symptoms (via the SANDE questionnaire), were recorded.

After 2 weeks, the Systane group showed significantly greater improvement in symptom scores, corneal staining, and conjunctival staining compared to the Walgreens group. Although the Systane group also exhibited a greater increase in NITBUT, the difference was not statistically significant.
