Home OCT enhances clinical decision-making in nAMD management

Posted on

Home optical coherence tomography (OCT) can significantly enhance personalized care for patients with neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) by enabling earlier and more tailored treatment decisions compared to conventional clinical practices, according to a study.

Fifteen specialists reviewed home OCT data from 29 eyes undergoing treatment, assessing when to treat, the choice of anti-VEGF agent, and thresholds for retinal fluid and time notifications.

Treatment withholding was recommended in 42.7% of cases, despite all eyes receiving treatment during the data segment period. Earlier treatment based on home OCT data would have prevented significant fluid accumulation, including 231.2 nL days of total retinal fluid. Retina specialists opted for different treatment agents in 40% of cases and set fluid notification thresholds at approximately 10 nL, with a mean time-based notification interval of 35 days.
