Falls, accidents are something to consider in patients with presbyopia correcting intraocular lenses

Posted on

Carmen Canovas Vidal, PhD, and Tawnya Pastuck, OD, both of Johnson & Johnson Vision, talk about a study presented at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Annual Meeting, which quantified the healthcare costs of motor vehicle accidents and falls in patients received presbyopia correcting IOLs at the time of cataract surgery.

Carmen Canovas Vidal, PhD:

I’m Carmen Canovas and I’m leading the lens design and vision science team in Johnson & Johnson Vision.

Tawnya Pastuck, OD:

I’m Tawnya Pastuck and I lead the health economics and market access team at Johnson & Johnson Vision. We’re here today to share with you a study that we completed quantifying the healthcare costs of motor vehicle accidents and falls in the patient population that has received presbyopia correcting IOLs implanted at the time of cataract surgery. That’s about 450,000 people in the United States that have presbyopia correcting IOLs implanted. When we look at the cost of that patient population that have had motor vehicle accidents and falls, it’s literally in the billions every year and the rate is between 8% and 11% of the patient population 65 and above. It’s a lot of our population. Knowing that 10% of those folks actually have the presbyopia correcting IOLs implanted, we know the potential impact of this economic savings would be in the millions of dollars.

Carmen Canovas Vidal, PhD:

The literature shows that contrast sensitivity is related with driving performance and also with risk of falls and trips. The literature also shows that contrast sensitivity is related to image quality, which is a preclinical metric that can be measured in the form of modulation transfer function, which is MTF. In this study, we measured the MTF of different presbyopia correcting lenses and we found out that TECNIS Odyssey is providing the highest image quality of any of the IOLs evaluated, providing up to 2.4 times higher MTF than the leading competitor trifocal intraocular lens in low light conditions.

Tawnya Pastuck, OD:

I think the 2 really important findings that you’ve shared with us with the data is really having that clinical metric, that MTF, to give us insights into something that we really didn’t have before. I think that’s a really great takeaway. Then of course, the objective of our study showing that there is that economic savings potential of this massive economic cost that is being spent every year. With that, I wanted to say thank you-

Carmen Canovas Vidal, PhD:

Yeah.

Tawnya Pastuck, OD:

… for partnering with me on this study.

Carmen Canovas Vidal, PhD:

My pleasure.

Tawnya Pastuck, OD:

Thank you for allowing us to share it with you today.
