Myopia control lenses effective at 12 months but uncertain at 24 months

Spectacle lenses designed to control myopia progression show significant short-term benefits in reducing myopia progression at 12 months but lack clear long-term efficacy at 24 months, according to a study.

This systematic review analyzed 21 studies, with 17 contributing data for meta-analysis. The study analyzed outcomes at 12- and 24-month intervals using data from 6,175 participants.

At 12 months, the lenses significantly reduced myopia progression, with a pooled effect size showing improvements in spherical equivalent refraction, axial length (P < 0.0001). However, at 24 months, these benefits were not statistically significant. Relative peripheral refraction results varied across lens models.

The findings suggest that while these lenses offer short-term benefits, their long-term efficacy remains unclear.
