IR-Pilo shows comparable efficacy to Vuity for presbyopia treatment
Both pilocarpine 1.25% analogue (IR-Pilo) and Vuity are effective and safe for improving near vision in presbyopic patients, with IR-Pilo demonstrating slightly greater improvements in accommodation and pupil constriction, according to a study.
The non-randomized study included 75 patients aged 40 to 60. One eye received either IR-Pilo (n = 45) or Vuity (n = 30), while the other eye served as a control. Researchers assessed refractive errors, visual acuity, accommodation, pupil size, and intraocular pressure (IOP) before and after instillation.
Both drops significantly improved near vision, with IR-Pilo showing a greater effect (4 vs 2.3 lines of improvement). A small myopic shift occurred in the Vuity group, but distance vision remained stable overall. Both drugs increased accommodation and pupil constriction, with IR-Pilo demonstrating a stronger effect. Neither drop significantly affected IOP or caused notable side effects.
