Presbyopia

Presbyopia management may require different approaches based on age

Posted on

Presbyopia progression is influenced by different ocular and physiological factors depending on age, according to a study.

Researchers analyzed data from 3,000 healthy individuals aged 40-69, grouped based on age (40s, 50s, and 60s). The study found that near add power increased with age, averaging 1.21 D in the 40s, 2.16 D in the 50s, and 2.72 D in the 60s.

Regression analysis found that in individuals in their 40s, near add power was associated with age, astigmatic errors, intraocular pressure, ganglion cell complex thickness, and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. In the 60s group, tear break-up time and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were the primary factors.
