Smart glasses enhance daily function for low vision patient
Smart glasses provide a successful solution for a low vision patient, offering features like scene description and text-to-speech that significantly improve his ability to perform daily activities, according to a poster presented at SECO 2025.
The presentation highlighted the case of a 63-year-old man with cone dystrophy and central scotomas who sought a low vision evaluation to improve his daily activities, particularly recognizing signs and scenery outdoors. With a best-corrected visual acuity of 20/250 in both eyes, he initially trialed a monocular telescope and an AI-powered assistive device. Although he appreciated some features of the AI device, he wanted to explore additional options.
At a follow-up visit, he tested smart glasses in-office and valued their lightweight design, phone call capabilities, scene description, and text-to-speech functions for both near and distance text. After expressing satisfaction, he ordered the glasses customized with his prescription and filter, aiming to enhance his daily efficiency and independence.
